Cowboys sign Payton Turner to one-year deal

NEW ORLEANS – Retaining talent has been a key focus for the New Orleans Saints in the early goings of free agency. However, some talent has exited the building, particularly on the defensive side. Along with cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Will Harris, the newest name added to the list is defensive end Payton Turner.
Per ESPN Cowboys Reporter Todd Archer, Turner and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a one-year deal.
Turner, a first-round selection by the Saints in 2021, never quite turned a corner in New Orleans. He showed flashes during his time, but his development and consistency never took off with limited opportunities and injuries stifling his chances.
With the Saints’ changing defensive scheme, Turner’s eventual departure felt like it was written on the wall. It’s clear that he potentially felt so as well thanks to a cryptic social media post in Turner’s Instagram page.
“No matter how good you are,” the post read. “If you are in the wrong place, you are worthless.”
Assuming Turner was referring to his playing situation, his departure is no surprise. While his time in New Orleans failed to live up to his draft status, he could potentially see the opportunities he’s looking for in Dallas.
Turner’s four-year career came to an end after the team declined his fifth-year option. During his tenure he secured 50 total tackles, 11 for a loss, five sacks and 11 hits on the quarterback in 30 games.
