Loomis confirms Carr injury, refuses to elaborate

During he pre-draft press conference Wednesday, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed Derek Carr’s shoulder “issue.” He didn’t say much else.
In an opening statement, Loomis said, “He does have an issue with his shoulder; we’re hoping to get some resolution and clarity on that in the near future, and when we do, I’ll report back to you.”
Reporters asked a half-dozen Carr-related questions, but each time Loomis deflected them saying he would only answer questions about the draft.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Carr suffered a shoulder injury and is contemplating surgery that would end his season. Considering his complicated contract situation, Carr might have taken his last snap as a Saint.
The organization restructured Carr’s contract the free up more than $30 million in salary cap space. That move, however, means his cap hit swells to nearly $70 million in 2026. The team would likely cut the 34-year-old after the 2025 season and swallow a huge dead cap number in 2026.
The Saints have been active in pursuing quarterbacks during the pre-draft process. Adam Schefter reported this week the team is likely to select a defensive lineman with the ninth overall pick but is seeking to move up from No. 40 overall presumably to select a signal caller.
