The lack of certainty around the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Derek Carr continues despite new information being shared during NFL Network’s pre-draft coverage.

Carr’s brother David, who is an analyst on NFL Network, provided some new details on Derek’s situation with the Saints.

“The Saints need to know if he’ll be available, and I promise that there is no one that would want to know that more than Derek,” David Carr said. “And so that’s what he’s working through. The Saints have been aware of this shoulder injury since the moment that it happened. Derek really believes that if it happened in the game where he broke his wrist.”

That last bit is a piece of new information. Speculation up to this point is that the shoulder issue in question was residual from the AC joint injury Derek Carr suffered in 2023 against the Green Bay Packers. Perhaps it is indeed the same injury, only exacerbated by the spill he took on the ill-advised leaping attempt he took during last year’s game against the New York Giants.

Further, David Carr says that his brother’s injury is one that could result in surgery, as initially reported, but that no decisions have been made at this time.

“He’s working with the Saints, he’s working with (Saints general manager Mickey Loomis),” David Carr said. “They’re trying to figure out the best way forward. Surgery’s a possibility. Not surgery is a possibility. That’s what Derek would prefer. ‘Let me just rehab this thing, let me get out there and make it go.’ But you don’t know yet and he’s trying to find the answers.”

So, not a ton of new information here. But David Carr’s update does further the idea that Carr could be unavailable for the Saints in 2025.

Should that be the case, it has a major impact on the Saints’ draft night.
