Five Star Safety Jonah Williams Picks Texas

08/24/2024

Texas finally landed a top prospect from the Lone Star State, and it might be the crown jewel of the class.  Galveston safety Jonah Williams picked the Longhorns over Texas A&M, LSU, Oregon, USC and dozens of other offers.

Williams is a dual sport star, the likes of which we rarely see.  The On3 Composite ranks him as the No. 1 safety and the No. 10 overall player in the class of 2025.  As a baseball prospect, at 6-foot-3, 206 pounds, he is a left-handed power hitting outfielder who projects to be selected in the top half of the first round of next summer’s MLB Draft.

Williams becomes the 18th commitment for the Longhorns and the highest-ranked pledge from Texas, where he ranks third.  Of the top six Texas prospects, Williams is the only one committed to a Texas school.

His older brother, Nick Williams, is a former second round pick of the Texas Rangers.  He played 294 games over parts of four MLB seasons with the Phillies and White Sox.

For the younger Williams, the challenge will be playing two sports at the collegiate level.  He plans to forgo his senior baseball season to enroll early and participate in spring football with the Longhorns.

Then there is the obstacle of the MLB Draft.  Even after Williams arrives on campus, MLB teams could still select him next summer.  Should he be drafted in the first round, the slot value would be $3 million or higher, making him a risk of never wearing the burnt orange.

Texas hired Jim Schlossnagle as it’s baseball coach in June.  The former Texas A&M coach had been recruiting Williams to the Aggies while he was in College Station.
