Florida QB Mertz Suffered Concussion
09/03/2024
The DJ Lagway era in Gainesville may be starting much earlier than anyone expected.
Starting QB Graham Mertz was knocked out of Florida’s blowout loss to Miami late in the third quarter with a concussion. Mertz, who had a strong year a season ago, struggled in the season opener. He completed just 11 of his 20 attempts for 91 yards with an interception.
Head Coach Billy Napier said Monday that the door could be open for highly touted freshman QB DJ Lagway to start if Mertz can’t go. Lagway was the No. 1 overall QB recruit in the country a year ago and stuck with the Gators the entire recruiting cycle. In his college debut, Lagway went 3-for-6 for 41 yards and threw an interception.
Florida faces Samford on Saturday night at 6:00 in Ben hill Griffin Stadium.
