LSU quarterback may be Saints target in 2026 NFL Draft

The 2025 NFL Draft is still months away, but early buzz surrounding a top quarterback prospect for 2026 is already generating intrigue—especially for the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints have been hard at work filling out their 2025 coaching staff after major turnover this offseason. Their offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier now has a direct connection to one of next year’s most intriguing passers—his son, LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

The younger Nussmeier made the decision to return to the Tigers this year, rather than declaring for the NFL Draft. Doing so may end up being a big win for the elder Nussmeier and the Saints.

SI’s Albert Breer briefly mentioned that some NFL scouts are high on the Tigers signal caller, making him a player to watch for 2026.

I’ve spoken with scouts who believe Nussmeier would’ve been the first quarterback taken this year had he declared,” Breer wrote in his Monday Morning Quarterback story.

Had that been the case, with the Saints drafting at No. 9 overall this year, they would have possibly had no chance to land the young signal caller.

But with Garrett Nussmeier returning to school for 2025, the Saints, and Doug Nussmeier, could have a chance to land his son in 2026.
