LSU will begin fall practices next week likely without redshirt freshman running back Trey Holly.

Holly was set to appear before the Union Parish Court on July 17, but that hearing has been postponed until September 18 while the prosecutor and State remain in the discovery phase.

Michael Small, Holly’s attorney, announced the change in status.

“The status conference previously scheduled before Judge Clement in Union Parish for tomorrow has been continued to September 18th at 1 pm,” Small said to Tiger Rag Magazine. “The prosecutor and I requested this change of dates because the State is still in the process of providing to me the evidence to which I am entitled pursuant to my various pretrial discovery motions.”

The delay will very likely keep Holy away from the football team until that September 18 date.

Head coach Brian Kelly had hoped to have Holly back with the squad in August.

“He’s been allowed to go to class,” Kelly told 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge’s Matt Moscona.  “So, he’s been able to work out. He hasn’t been able to work out with the team, but he’s been in a regimented workout routine that has been monitored. We monitor his academics. It’s not like he’s off by himself. He’s here in Baton Rouge…I think when hopefully this gets taken care of that he’ll be able to come in and work his way back.”

All of this stems from a February 9 shooting in Holly’s hometown of Farmerville. Two individuals were injured, one critically. The investigation into the incident revealed that three shooters fired shots.

Holly was later arrested and charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder, one count of aggravated criminal damage to property and one count of illegal use of a weapon.

Two months later the attempted second-degree murder charge was dismissed by a grand jury.

Holly, Louisiana’s all-time high school rushing leader, played in three games in 2023 and rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown. His 67-yard touchdown run against Army helped earn him SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
