“I picked LSU because I feel like it was really the best fit for me,” Mack told Matt Moscona on After Further Review. “I feel like I’ve been holding out on them because I’ve really always felt this way. The coaching staff has always shown love, and I feel like the system supports me the best.”
Mack said co-offensive coordinator Cortez Hankton has been his primary recruiter with offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson and head coach Brian Kelly.
“My relationship (with Cortez Hankton) is great,” Mack said. “I feel like it will really be a father-son relationship just based on how much we talk. It’s not always about football. It’s about life. I really feel like that’s the best part of it.”
Mack continued that not all coaches around the country have taken the time to grow the personal side of the recruitment.
“I really feel like they don’t, and I think that’s something coaches should get more into because a lot of athletes after football, they pretty much don’t know what to do,” Mack said. I feel like a lot of coaches need to reach deeper into the athletes, and that’s Coach Hankton with me…really the whole LSU coaching staff is like a family. It’s never always about football. It’s about how’s life, and that’s the most important thing to me.”
Mack is one of four highly touted wide receivers to join the LSU class early. Airline’s Kenny Darby led the state in receiving last season as a junior. Jakai Anderson from McDonough 35 is a top 25 receiver nationally according to On3 and ESPN. and Tristen Keys is the nation’s top receiver from Hattiesburg, Miss.
“I’ve talked to Tristen Keys a little but never really about going to LSU together,” Mack said. “After I committed, we definitely talked a little bit. He congratulated me.”
The class could end up being mentioned with the 2011 class that produced Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry or the 2021 class that yielded Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas.
“They’re the greats,” Mack said. “They are and were the greats in the NFL. Being able to put my name on that list would be legendary.”
Mack told Moscona he’s currently 6-foot-1 and 200 lbs. He’s spending his senior year working on reading defenses and adding muscle during his final prep season.
As for recruiting, Mack insists he’s solidly committed to LSU but will be taking his five official visits.
“I’ll still be going on all my official visits just to get the experience,” Mack said. “My family, they love all the experiences, so that’ll be a big thing for me just letting them see places outside of Louisiana.”
