MARLER: Week 3 SEC QB Rankings

09/12/2024
Beck

16 – Brock Vandagriff (Last Week: 12)

If I could put him lower than 16, I would if we are being honest. Vandagriff was 3-of-10 for 30 total yards last week vs South Carolina. And, that included a 31 yard completion.

15 – Payton Thorne (Last Week: 10)

Payton Thorne threw four interceptions versus Cal a week ago. He was arguably the sole reason they lost to Cal. The only reason he wasn’t last this week is because his team was still in contention to win.

14 – LaNorris Sellers ((Last Week: 16)

Sellers was less than stellar in Lexington, but he did enough in enough big moments to help USC win for the third straight year against Kentucky.

13 – Florida’s QB (Last Week: NA)

DJ Lagway was outstanding last week, but Graham Mertz is back from the dead this week to split snaps versus Texas A&M. Both of these guys can be top half of the league QBs. It’s up in the air though on whether or not Napier will figure out the right mix/balance of who to use and how to get there.

12 – Jackson Arnold (Last Week: 13)

Oklahoma fans were merciless last week about me not watching enough Jackson Arnold in week one against Temple. Good news Sooner fans! I watched him against Houston, and he was objectively worse. I don’t know who’s to blame for the offensive struggles, but averaging five yards per pass is not gonna get it done.

11 – Conner Weigman (Last Week: 14)

I have nothing to say about Conner Weigman. He was fine against McNeese St. Nothing more, and nothing less.

10 – Diego Pavia (Last Week: 9)

Vandy is 2-0 and if they win in Atlanta this weekend they will have surpassed their season win total from Vegas in all of 2024, in just three games. Vandy won last week in front of a near sellout crowd. Most of the things mentioned above are because of the play and excitement from Diego Pavia.

9 – Brady Cook (Last Week: 7)

It feels odd having Cook this low. At the same it feels like he could easily be lower on the list. Cook returned all of his top targets at receiver including arguably the best WR in the country in Luther Burden. So how does he have one total passing touchdown against the weakest schedule played in the entire conference? He’s gotta get Burden going, and fast.

8 – Blake Shapen (Last Week: 11)

Mississippi State lost to Arizona State last weekend, but it was no fault of Blake Shapen’s. It wasn’t Shapen that gave up 265 yards to a running back no one has ever heard of. He has been fantastic so far this season completing nearly 69% of his passes (nice!), and averaging over 10.7 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and no turnovers.

7 – Taylen Green (Last Week: 8)

Arkansas should have left Stillwater with a win last week, but thanks to a comedy of errors they return home 1-1. Through two games, Green and Bobby Petrino have been a match made in heaven. He has been outstanding with his arm and his legs, and he will be a threat all season in this conference regardless of what’s around him.

6 – Nico Iamaleava (Last Week: 4)

It took two games for the Hawaiian Prince to look mortal, as Nico threw two interceptions versus NC State. That being said, he’s still averaging three touchdowns per game and nearly 75% completion percentage.

5 – Jalen Milroe (Last Week: 1)

It felt like Milroe was not going to hang on to the top spot for long this season, but it was disappointing to see him play his way out of it by Week 3 against USF and WKU. Bama’s offense looked disjointed at best and at worst, just very bad last week versus USF. At one point they had five straight drives that amassed a total of -23 yards. They better get it figured out before UGA.

4 – Garrett Nussmeier (Last Week: 4)

LSU’s offense can’t run the football. What it can do is light up a scoreboard again thanks to Garrett Nussmeier. Nuss has eight total TDs through two games including six last week vs Nicholls. He and Kyren Lacy have been a lethal combination so far. He’ll face a tough test this weekend in Columbia considering how fierce this Gamecock pass rush is and how opportunistic the defense is as a whole. USC has forced 70 turnovers since the start of the 2021 season.

3 – Quinn Ewers (Last Week: 5)

Quinn Ewers went into the Big House like Rick James last weekend. He put his boots all over their couch and said…well if you watched the Chappelle Show you know the rest. Ewers was great against a Michigan defense that was supposed to be one of the better units in the country, as he torched UM for three TDs and zero turnovers.

2 – Carson Beck (Last Week: 3)

Carson Beck will be number one on this list at some point this season. Guaranteed. It’s just not gonna be after a blowout win versus Tennessee Tech. Beck has been outstanding so far through two games this season completing nearly 71% of his passes and collecting seven total TDs along the way including five versus Tennessee Tech. He’ll have a chance to take over the top spot this week with a nationally televised game in primetime versus Kentucky.

1 – Jaxson Dart (Last Week: 2)

You could’ve easily made the case for Beck at number one this week…if it weren’t for Jaxson Dart. Let’s be clear, he absolutely deserves the top spot after the start he’s gotten off to. Dart set an SEC record with 24 straight completions versus MTSU and has completed 87.5% of his passes this season. To put that in perspective, he had just five total games in the previous two years with over 70% completion percentage. The jump he’s made has been awesome to watch, and he’s been the clear-cut best QB in the league through two weeks.
