Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury emerged as a popular name in head coaching searches around the league this offseason. However, it now appears he is putting potential advancement on hold to focus on his team’s playoff run.

An admirable decision by Kingsbury, Pro Football Talk reports that the offensive coordinator and former Arizona Cardinals head coach will wait to conduct any interviews for a possible head coach position until after the Commanders’ playoff run ends.

The New Orleans Saints requested to interview Kingsbury earlier in the cycle, and per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, were expected to interview him either Friday or Saturday of this week.

However, that looks likely to be on hold. This is a decision that should be appreciated. The NFL’s rules around playoff coaches being allowed to interview while actively gameplanning have always felt like burning the candle at both ends. Adequately preparing for a head coach interview takes a ton of work and focus. Trying to double that up with a postseason schedule just seems hellacious.

New Orleans was also expected to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and last season’s interim head coach Darren Rizzi sometime this week. Those interviews may still be on.

Kingsbury, however, will wait to see how this weekend’s tilt with the Detroit Lions goes to see if he will end up interviewing sooner rather than later.
