Report: Moore not sold on Saints job
By Ross Jackson
MOBILE, Ala. — The coaching search for the New Orleans Saints is expected to finally draw to a close soon. With four finalists, all signs are pointing to Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore being the preferred hire in New Orleans.
However, as the Reese’s Senior Bowl week wraps up in Mobile, Ala., rumors are swirling that Moore may be underwhelmed with a key piece of the NFL puzzle when it comes to New Orleans: the team’s quarterback room.
Per The Athletic NFL Insider Diana Russini, there was “scuttlebutt” in Mobile that Moore may not like the Saints’ job because the Saints “don’t have a quarterback already in place.”
Russini said on her Scoop City podcast, that she believes Moore has “come around” on the issue, with a belief that he may see New Orleans as the right landing spot after all.
If Moore isn’t enamored with the Saints’ quarterback room, he is likely to be given the power to change it. It’s rare that a new head coach joins a team only to be saddled with a signal caller they do not want to work with, at least long term.
Moving on from Carr in 2025 would present some challenges, but wouldn’t be impossible. If designated as a post-June 1 cut, the team would save $30 million on June 2. They would still have to find money-saving avenues elsewhere beforehand in order to be buyers in free agency, even as discount shoppers, but the path is available.
The team also has two young passers in Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. However, neither have enough experience to bank on as a franchise quarterback option for an incoming head coach.
Moore should be given the freedom to make adjustments at the position, and with this news getting out, it’s likely that they would indeed take place if he is indeed offered and accepts the position.
