Report: Saints expected to request to interview Aaron Glenn
This was expected all along, but now that coaching searches are finally getting underway in earnest, the expectations are heating up.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints are among three teams that are expected to request a head coach interview with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. That list of three is sure to grow over the coming weeks, but the Saints being included early is substantial.
Chicago Bears and New York Jets joined the Saints on Schefter’s list.
Glenn is still coaching in the playoffs as the Lions are expected to go on a deep run. However, he can still be interviewed virtually until Monday, Jan. 13. He can then do in-person interviews once the Lions season officially ends as long as that date is after Sunday, Jan. 19, which is guaranteed after Glenn and the Lions earned a first-round bye with a big win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football.
That very performance may be one of the biggest selling points for Glenn, whose defense limited one of the NFL’s best offenses to just nine points and 262 net yards. Those nine points were the Vikings’ lowest total of the 2024 season while the 262 total yards ranks as their second-lowest output of the season.
Glenn has ties with the Saints serving as the team’s defensive backs coach from 2016 through 2020. The former NFL corner also suited up for New Orleans in 2008.
Glenn will certainly be tempted by the open position with the Jets as well. He was drafted by New York No. 12 overall in the 1994 NFL draft, and the Jets, despite their recent ineptitude, are one of the most storied franchises in the league. New Orleans will have competition for the candidate many experts consider as the team’s top pursuit.
