Report: Saints hire Peter Sirmon as linebackers coach

INDIANAPOLIS — The New Orleans Saints have added another staff member to their defensive coaching group, and again, the new addition is coming up from the collegiate ranks. 

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Saints are hiring former Cal defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon to be the team’s next linebacker coach. 

New Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has now hired two staff members to his defense and both will be taking on their first NFL coaching responsibilities. 

Sirmon has NFL player experience, however. The former pro linebacker was a fourth-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in the 2000 NFL Draft. He remained with the Titans until 2006, after that he began his coaching career as the Central Washington linebackers coach in 2008. 

In addition to his linebackers coach and defensive coordinator experience, Sirmon has also been a recruiting coordinator with both USC and Cal. Sirmon won’t have to recruit in the NFL, but that experience should go a long way in developing and maintaining relationships with his players.
