On Monday afternoon, the New Orleans Saints announced that they completed an in-person interview with interim head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi for their open head coaching position.

Rizzi is the fourth completed interview for the Saints, so far. They held virtual interviews with Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, New York Giants offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Mike Kafka, and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator and former Saints defensive backs coach Aaron Glenn last week.

Rizzi was appointed interim head coach after the team moved on from former coach Dennis Allen, following the Week Nine loss to the Carolina Panthers. Rizzi led the team to two immediate wins before claiming victory just once more as the season limped to a close. He was a key part in late-season changes just as locker room adjustments, practice scheduling, and roster and coaching staff adjustments.

Rizzi is best known for earning trust and support from his staff and roster during a challenging time for the organization. He was a heavily-considered favorite back in 2022 before Allen was eventually hired.

The Saints may look to hold another second interview with Rizzi at a later point, typically a key moment for coaching candidates. However, with the familiarity the organization already has with the coach, that may not be necessary.

If Rizzi is not selected as the team’s full-time head coach during this cycle, all signs point to a split, as he would be likely to follow the historic path of interim coaches and pursue another opportunity elsewhere.
