Saints extend DT Nathan Shepherd, strengthen defensive line

By Ross Jackson
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints continue to solidify their trenches. After trading for former New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, the Saints took to a familiar face to bolster the position for the near future.
Per NFL Insider Josina Anderson, the Saints and defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd have agreed upon a one-year extension.
I’m told Nate Sheperd has agreed to a 1-year extension with the #Saints, per league source.

While Shepherd was not set to be a free agent this offseason, his cap hit was impacted by the NFL’s Player Performance Program. His base salary was set to be $4.8 million in 2025 with the contract voiding in 2026.
Likely what the Saints will do here is similar to what they did with veteran defenders Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis last year. Shepherd will probably see his base salary reduced this year in exchange for future considerations in 2026.
Shepherd gets another year of stability under contract, the Saints get some cap relief in 2025. A win-win for both sides.
