A Baton Rouge native is on his way back to his home state.
Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, the New Orleans Saints are signing former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The Saints later announced that the signing brings the running back to their practice squad. To make room for the addition, New Orleans terminated the practice squad contract of defensive tackle Kendal Vickers
With starting running back Alvin Kamara dealing with a groin adductor injury and undergoing further testing, this provides some much-needed insurance at running back. The Saints have gotten a boost in that area with the recent return of second-year running back Kendre Miller. Now, they’ll get another boost in case Kamara is unable to go.
Edwards-Helaire joins three other former LSU Tigers including tight end Foster Moreau and safety Tyrann Mathieu on the active roster and offensive lineman Austin Deculus on the practice squad.
The veteran running back spent his first four NFL seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning two Super Bowls with the team. He also joins a number of former Chiefs on the Saints roster.
He will provide New Orleans with another outside rushing option as well as another receiver out of the backfield. Edwards-Helaire has accumulated 1,845 career rushing yards on 441 carries with 12 rushing touchdowns in his career. He has also reeled in 89 career receptions for 765 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
