Saints QB Rattler announces jersey number change

Number changes are common during the NFL offseason and the New Orleans Saints have seen their latest.
Per an NFL jersey number tracker on the social platform X, the second-year passer is changing his jersey number from No. 18 to No. 2. The young passer confirmed the report by reposting the initial post on X and also following up with a separate story post on Instagram.

The number change gives Rattler the opportunity to don the same digit that he once did while at Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Ariz. The quarterback also wore No. 2 while participating in the 2024 Senior Bowl as well.
Rattler chooses a number that has only been worn by seven players in franchise history before him. All were either kickers or quarterbacks:
Kicker Chip Lohmiller (1995)
Kicker Olindo Mare (2007)
Kicker John Kasay (2011)
Quarterback Aaron Brooks (2000-2005)
Kicker Zach Hocker (2015)
Quarterback Jameis Winston (2020-2023)
Quarterback Kellen Mond (2024)
The young signal caller is expected to be the bona fide “QB2” behind starting quarterback Derek Carr in 2025. He and fellow passer Jake Haener were locked in a battle for that role all season long throughout 2024, but the indecisiveness by former coach Dennis Allen may have been more of a hindrance to the passers’ development than a benefit.
“QB2” wearing No. 2 feels appropriate, though Rattler had six starts last season and depending on Carr’s ability to stay healthy in 2025, could have more in his future. Ideally though, the Saints can stay healthy as this pivotal position. However if Rattler sees the field this year, it’ll be in a different number to match his goal of being a different player after a hard-working offseason.
