SEC Baseball Weekend: New blood vs blue blood

If you have plans, break them. It’s going to be one of the best sports weekends of the year, especially in regards to SEC baseball.

New Blood vs Blue Blood

I’ve said this about Tennessee baseball a lot over the past few years: their baseball team embodies a personality that’s parallel to if Vol Twitter came to life. Vol Twitter has been a bastion of horrid sportsmanship and over the top fanaticism for years. And they love it.

I don’t have a problem with Vol Twitter. I have a problem with the psychology behind it. It’s like they want to be horrible just to be horrible. On top of that, they want to be talked about like they are Ohio State, just without the trophy case.

That’s where this weekend gets interesting. Blue blood LSU hosting new blood Tennessee. New money vs old money at Alex Box in what will certainly be one of the most contentious and fun atmospheres in college baseball all season.

Big Brother, Little Brother Baseball

Speaking of contentious. Texas and Texas A&M meet in Austin this weekend.

SEC fans may not care about either team, hate their fanbases, or take any of their weird traditions seriously. However, the level of hate these two have for each other is unlike anything else in this conference.

Alabama and Auburn hate each other, sure. But, they tolerate each other. Ole Miss and Mississippi State fans hate each other, but no one outside the states cares about either. Georgia and Florida hate each other, but it only matters one day a year in late October.

Texas and Texas A&M hate each other every minute, of every hour, of every day, year round. Period.

This weekend’s theater in Austin will be must see

4 way stop

Three series stand out more than any other this weekend because of what they can mean for the rest of the season: Ole Miss-Vanderbilt, Georgia-Oklahoma, and South Carolina-Kentucky.

South Carolina and Kentucky face off with both teams coming off a surprise series win at home a week ago. The Wildcats upset Tennessee and the Gamecocks nearly swept Ole Miss. Neither team will make the trip to Omaha it seems, but this weekend will go a long way in proving what the rest of the season will entail, and the effort that will go along with it.

Elsewhere, I’m most excited about Vandy-Ole Miss in Oxford and Georgia-Oklahoma. Oklahoma has been bad at times this season, but with Kyson Witherspoon on the mound in game one, they are always a threat to get the series started in their favor.

The other series is between two top 20 teams in Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. These teams have flirted with being near the top tier of SEC teams this season, but neither have been able to stick there. Vandy swept UGA last weekend, but lost to Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday. Both teams will try to take a break from the one step forward, two steps back dance they’ve been doing all year.
